NiftyNoon: Yuga Labs Blocks OpenSea and Blur

Following OpenSea's removal of enforced royalties, Yuga Labs has begun blocking the marketplace from its new collections(September 28, 2023)

Nifty Thought

• The royalty marketplace saga continues as Yuga Labs officially blocks OpenSea and Blur amongst other royalty-optional marketplaces on its new Mara collection. This means that most sales of the NFTs are happening on x2y2 which is, ironically, one of the first marketplaces that originally adopted a royalty-optional model. Ultimately, this may come down to a cat-and-mouse game where marketplaces deploy new contracts and Yuga Labs rushes to block them in response. Therefore, marketplace blocking is unlikely to be a sustainable long-term solution to royalty enforcement. This will likely require changes to how NFT incentives are delivered and more transparency in which NFTs were purchased with royalties. Social implications will likely be the strongest enforcer of something that technology cannot mandate.
