NiftyNoon: Blur’s Killer Strategy with Opensea Flagged NFTs?
Blur attempts to make OpenSea irrelevant by cutting off its liquidity advantage (February, 27 2023)
Nifty Thought
OpenSea has faced many credible marketplace threats in the past that attempted to undercut fees. Notably, X2Y2 went royalty optional while only charging a 0.5% marketplace fee. Conversely, OpenSea charged up to 10% creator royalties with a 2.5% marketplace fee. However, no marketplace has succeeded in taking away OpenSea’s market share the way Blur has. While Blur may have initially beaten OpenSea on fees, it is now succeeding for a different reason: liquidity. Bid pools and overall increased market activity on Blur make the new marketplace impossible to ignore for anyone motivated to sell an NFT. The recent move that allows OpenSea flagged NFTs to be sold into Blur bids is another strategic play that strips away even more liquidity from OpenSea.
Because flagged NFTs are now a normal part of Blur transactions (anyone bidding aggressively on the platform will receive them), most Blur users will now be further incentivized to stray away from OpenSea. Flagged NFTs cannot be sold on OpenSea and cannot even accept direct WETH offers. Therefore, Blur has created an entirely new class of assets that has full liquidity on Blur and no liquidity on OpenSea. By re-integrating flagged assets into the broader NFT trading pool, more people will be forced to avoid OpenSea entirely.
