Yuga Labs teases "The Trial" with much speculation surrounding its relation of BAKC (November 26, 2022)

Nifty Thought

• It is truly remarkable how dominant Yuga Labs is within the NFT space. An otherwise dull day (the Thanksgiving US holiday) can be completely upended by a simple image tweeted by the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) account. There has been much speculation surrounding the image with visual references to a dog in the image resulting in massive volume flooding into the BAYC companion project, Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC).

• Although much is still unknown about “The Trial”, it likely involves the Trial of Jimmy the Monkey item on the BAYC roadmap. This is teased as the prologue to the Mecha Dog story that was once described in a leaked Yuga Labs pitch deck as the ultimate monetization plan for the BAKC. BAKC, which was originally offered to BAYC holders for free and now carries a 0% royalty, has yet to generate any revenue for Yuga Labs (initial royalties were donated to charities). The Mecha Dog campaign may result in a wrapped NFT (that has royalties) and allows users to swap their BAKC for Mecha BAKCs which enables them to participate in the story. According to previously leaked documents, this would culminate in an ultimate Mecha Dog vs. Mecha Monkey invasion.

• Furthermore, this seemingly story-driven campaign is coming right off the announcement of the Yuga Labs acquisition of WENEW Labs. WENEW Labs is most notable for its compelling storytelling campaign with the 10KTF NFT. It is highly likely that some sort of crossover will occur here. At the very least, Yuga Labs seems positioned to leverage the WENEW Labs expertise with crafting NFT story-driven campaigns.
