NiftyNoon: Can OpenSea Pro Finally De-Throne Blur?
The fierce corporate battle between OpenSea and Blur continues as OpenSea reveals their professional user product (April 5, 2023)
Nifty Thought
OpenSea’s formal response to Blur is here: OpenSea Pro. This is essentially a rebranded version of the Gem v2 platform that has been in beta. In other words, it is an NFT aggregator that can aggregate listings across multiple marketplaces including LooksRare and Blur. The idea here is that users will prefer using OpenSea Pro because it aggregates listings from all marketplaces rather than just a few marketplaces such as Blur. OpenSea has also continued their race to the fee bottom against Blur by eliminating marketplace fees for a limited period on OpenSea Pro. They have, however, reinstated marketplace fees on the main OpenSea marketplace.
While the OpenSea Pro product is compelling and the elimination of marketplace fees (at least temporarily) makes the platform competitive, OpenSea still trails behind Blur in two key aspects. First, Blur’s incentive structure with bidding and listing has proved to be quite formidable. While OpenSea has teased their own NFT rewards, it is not clear if this opaque incentive structure can compete with the tangible bidding points people receive on Blur. Furthermore, OpenSea lacks the bid pools that Blur has. This both provides better liquidity for people hoping to sell their NFTs but also forces bidders to lock their ETH into the Blur pool. This ETH cannot be used on other platforms and therefore makes Blur more “sticky” as a product.
