BONK DAO lost $20 million after an attacker spent $4.4 million to buy enough tokens to pass a malicious governance proposal (July 8, 2026)

An anonymous attacker spent roughly $4.4 million to acquire enough BONK tokens to narrowly pass a governance proposal that transferred $20 million from the BONK DAO treasury into their own wallet. By accumulating just over the 1% quorum requirement, the attacker successfully voted in favor of their own malicious proposal, bypassing the thousands of DAO members who did not participate in the vote. Following the heist, the attacker immediately began selling off their initial token stake and moving the stolen treasury funds, which caused the price of BONK to drop over 9% as exchanges like Upbit temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals. 

While BonkDAO has involved law enforcement and is actively working with exchanges and the Solana Foundation to manage the fallout, this event sparks a critical debate on the limits of decentralized autonomous organizations. Because the attacker utilized a legitimate governance mechanism rather than a smart contract bug, it exposes a massive vulnerability in on-chain voting structures where majority control can simply be bought for less than the treasury’s total value. Moving forward, this will likely force DAOs across the crypto space to rethink their quorum thresholds and governance security measures. If communities can adapt and patch these systemic flaws, the broader crypto industry could emerge much stronger and more resilient as the space continues to mature.
