Matt Kane’s controversial Rare Pass piece ignites a surprising Twitter controversy (October 4, 2023)

• Matt Kane, one of the most celebrated generative artists in the space, has recently released a controversial AI-generated collection with Super Rare’s RarePass. Super Rare played a pivotal role in Kane’s career helping promote him to become the artist he’s known as today. During a time of financial struggle for the company, Super Rare asked notable artists to help contribute art to their art pass that they would mint to the broader NFT public. Many people purchased this Rare Pass purely because they wished to receive artwork from Matt Kane and XCOPY.

• Yesterday, Kane’s Rare Pass piece was finally sent to holders. It was a collection of AI-generated artwork that was very different in style and method to his previous works. Some of his official traits noted that the work was low effort and in its first act. In a Twitter spaces with Super Rare, Kane argued this was a performance piece targeted against art middlemen (such as Super Rare) that provide little value for artists. Pindar Van Arman defended Super Rare by arguing with Kane over how much Super Rare had done for Kane’s career and how insulting this piece was for his collectors.

• Kane seems to heavily allude to the idea that this is simply the first act of the work. The work itself is a performance that is not yet complete. Holders have speculated there may be a burn to evolve the piece on Halloween due to the candy symbol found in the unchangeable smart contract. Regardless of how one feels on the matter, it is undeniable that Kane has released one of the most impactful NFT art pieces in quite a while. If anything, it has been successful in evoking strong collector emotions and igniting a dialogue that has taken over the NFT art scene.
