NiftyNoon: Has the Otherside Ruined the Bored Ape Yacht Club?

Not everyone is a fan of the Yuga Labs shift to gaming (September 29, 2023)

Nifty Thought

• Yuga Labs originally succeeded with its Bored Ape Yacht Club on the back of their strong branding and community support. Some holders viewed it as an elite social club for digital natives while others viewed it as the next hyped emerging streetwear brand. Regardless of specific sentiment, all holders could agree on one thing; the Bored Ape Yacht Club was very cool. However, since the launch of the Otherside, the club seems to have shed that identity in exchange for a new gaming-centric brand approach. Legends of Mara and the various Yuga Labs games have continued to anchor the community’s focus on gaming.

• With that being said, Yuga Labs has still continued to deliver on its original vision through collaborations with Bathing Ape and its upcoming ApeFest event in Hong Kong. Although the attention for Bored Ape Yacht Club members might have shifted to gaming, it is clear that the company overall is still engaging in a myriad of different brand activations. It just so happens that gaming is what resonates most consistently with its core community. This makes sense as these other avenues are focused around physical activations. Gaming, however, is a digital native activity that is suitable for a digital native audience.
