Why is NFT Twitter ignoring the fourth generation Reddit avatar drop? (July 27, 2023)

Nifty Thought

• Reddit’s fourth generation of digital avatars are here. Although this a new line in the most successful NFT project in history, much of NFT Twitter seems to have ignored this drop. The nuance here is quite interesting. Much of the Reddit-natives actively interested in collecting these avatars are doing so because they truly wish to own these digital objects. The desire and potential for flipping is far lower.

• This reveals the mentality of the vast majority of current NFT participants: a desire to buy and sell quickly for a profit. That is perfectly reasonable and likely has helped some collections such as Bored Ape Yacht Club achieve their wild success. However, it has also proven to be unsustainable in the long run. In many ways, this is the true success of Reddit’s digital collectibles product. They have created NFTs that people want to own for the sake of ownership, rather than for the sake of a quick flip. While the flippers of Twitter May not care for these avatars, the collectors of Reddit clearly do.
