Secondary market reacts negatively as Yuga reveals details for their upcoming skill-based mint (January 12, 2023)

Nifty Thought

• The greatest thief of joy is a high expectation. Although the skill-based minting system introduced by Bored Ape Yacht Club and Yuga Labs is a legitimately new experience for the web3 space, it is not quite what NFT gamblers were hoping for. This gamified experience will require users to game and earn points on their end. Conversely, it seems many people were hoping for a free airdrop that would inherently reward them with no further commitment needed. The market pullback for Yuga Labs assets, especially for Bored Ape Kennel Club NFTs, has been extremely sharp.

• Nonetheless, there is still so much left unknown about this mint. For example, nothing is known about the prizes earned from the skill-based mint other than a vague description of it being a power source that will evolve throughout 2023. This further cements the notion that the NFT secondary market is largely fueled by speculation. The only way to win is to be on the correct side of that speculation.
