Blur's battle against OpenSea rages on as Blur employs a clever new strategy to circumvent projects blocking it (January 31, 2023)

Nifty Thought

• The war between Blur and OpenSea rages on. Over the past few weeks, an increasing number of collections have used the operator filter to block sales Blur and enable royalties on OpenSea. Naturally, this forces people off Blur’s site and back into OpenSea. In response, Blur has begun using OpenSea’s own seaport protocol to circumvent this block and enable all collections to be sold and traded on Blur. While this is OpenSea’s protocol, Blur has eliminated OpenSea’s 2.5% marketplace fee while keeping creator royalties enabled. OpenSea’s initial attempt to block Blur out of the ecosystem seems to have failed but they have succeeded in forcing Blur to mandate creator royalties on some collections.

• Unfortunately, this race to the bottom has not yielded anything meaningful for consumers as teams seem to be fighting on logistics rather than on customer experience. In the end, a new entrant may use Blur’s seaport strategy but eliminate creator royalties as well. In this case, liquidity may flow due to the lower trading friction.
